What is a Studded Tube?

Studded tubes are a type of metal tubes. These tubes have studs welded onto the metal tube. These studs are arranged in a specific formation throughout the length of the tube. They are often used in boilers and refineries. As they increase the surface area for higher heat transfer they are used for reheating.
 

Making of a Studded Tube

When an electric current is passed at the contact point of the studs and the tube, this, in turn, provides resistance. The resistance causes heat to be produced which is then used for welding. Maximum heat is generated at the interface of the tube and the studs due to maximum resistance. No external heat source is used to weld the studs and tubes together. The pressure is used to forge the two together instead. Hence, they are extremely useful in the process that works under high temperature and pressure.

Uses and Applications of Studded Tubes

 
Studded Tubes are mostly used in boilers and furnaces. Mostly in a corrosive environment. In petrochemical industries, high crude oil which has high density is passed through studded tubes. Heat is generated from outside the tube. On the other end of the tube, we obtain a liquid product which is later sent for processing.

Studded tubes are also used in water tube boilers. They help in heating water. The studded tubes are oval shaped and are welded onto the boilers.

The amount of bare pipes used is reduced by the usage of studded tubes as heat transfer surface of one studded tube can replace the surface of 4 to 10 bare pipes.

Studded tubes can be used in applications where harsh fuels are used which can cause damage to the environment. To protect them from corrosion, the external surfaces of the studded tubes can be coated or treated with a protective layer.

Since studded tubes minimize erosion, they are also used in Soda ash boilers and fluidized bed reactors.

They are also used in steel plants, air coolers, power plants, heat exchangers, etc.

The studded fin tube is manufactured by Resistance Welding of Studs on the Bare tubes.

The fins are manufactured by welding of the fin material which is essential a stud or rod welded at base to the tube by electrical resistance process.
The current is made to flow through the tube and the base of the studs.The studs are specifically made in shapes to facilitate the welding process. The stud during the finning "welding " process is also mechanically pressed on the tube at the point of welding thence causing a very good mechanical bond. This type of Fin Tube find very good application in high pressure and high temperature applications. The mechanical bond is very strong and hence finds application in places where extreme mechanical load, stress is expected while during the process or cleaning etc.
These fin tubes find application in finned Pipes, air Coolers, heat exchangers etc and are preferred in Industries like
petrochemical refineries , power plants , chemical industries , steel plants , etc,
